Trainspotting 7.7

Trainspotting follows Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his friends through their day to day lives as they struggle with heroin addiction, money, and the law. It is a cult classic that made the career of director Danny Boyle as well as being a breakout performance for Ewan McGregor.

Highly stylized, highly 90’s. This movie is not for everyone. It’s twisted, fast paced, and sometimes funny. Given the style of the movie, the directing and cinematography were fantastic. Danny Boyle did an amazing job of putting the viewer in the mind of Renton, especially as he was going through heroin withdrawal. While I found it very interesting as a piece of artwork, it is a movie that I have no desire to see again.

As a Scotsman, I absolutely adore this film. The humour and characterisation is pitch perfect, the performances are top drawer and Boyle’s inventive and kinetic direction adds some real style to this flick. Robert Carlyle as the psychotic Begbie, is also a real highlight. This would make my top ten of favourite films.

It’s an amazing movie! Definitely grew on me the second time I saw it (I need to update this review). I believe Danny Boyle’s coming out with a sequel!
